Dandelion partners with residential geothermal contractors throughout the Northeast to provide geothermal drilling and ground loop installation services. One example of this type of project is an August 2024 project Dandelion drilled at a home in Belchertown, MA.

The Belchertown, MA home was tucked into the forest, just off the road. While a wheeled rig may have been able to access the front yard, drilling there would require trenching across the driveway because the homeowner’s heating system was located on the left side of the house, on the top of the above picture.

With our tracked rig and separate compressor, we were able to locate the borehole on the side of the house right next to where the geothermal heat pump would be located, keeping the trench short and the equipment out of the way of the homeowner’s driveway.

In addition to the rig and compressor, Dandelion can bring a custom dumpster to jobs that will benefit from it to collect spoils and keep the site clean. A custom umbilical is run from the rig to the dumpster, funneling the spoils directly into it for containment. Note how clean the homeowner’s side yard is, even in the middle of the drilling process. This can be critical for suburban homes in densely populated neighborhoods.

Our rigs are small and lightweight. In addition to allowing for access to tight spaces, this allows us to work with small crews and avoid the need for auxiliary equipment that might otherwise be needed to lift heavy drill rods, for example.

In this photo, you can see one of our drilling team members is able to easily move a rod into position himself, without the aid of external equipment.

Dandelion typically drills 4.5” boreholes for our residential projects and installs 1.5” u-bend pipes. This photo shows the u-bend pipes coming out of the borehole before grouting has taken place.

A specially designed truck delivers the drilling rig and dumpster and collects them at the end of the job in order to drive them to the next location.

All in all, Dandelion’s single family residential drilling suite of equipment is optimized for residential job sites, homeowner friendliness (keeping the site clean), small drill crew sizes and straightforward transportation logistics. All of these elements allow us to offer competitive pricing for drilling services that homeowners love.

The Landing at Escopus Icehouse is a collection of residential townhomes located in the town of Saugerties, New York. Situated on the Hudson River, these units offer residents riverfront views and access to a walking trail along the water.

Dandelion designed and installed geothermal ground loops and heat pumps in 11 new townhomes in the Landing at Esopus Icehouse. This project was drilled in November 2023 and will be completed at the end of 2024. Installing geothermal allowed the builder to avoid equipment pads, line set runs and brazing and it was significantly less expensive than installing air source heat pumps would have been, both for the builder and for the customer.

Dandelion was proud to partner with the Kingston Library in Kingston, NY on a geothermal system as part of a comprehensive renovation of a historic community library in 2024. This project required 20 boreholes of 500’ depth. Dandelion designed and drilled the boreholes, designed and completed the tie-in and designed and installed the manifolds.

This project required Dandelion to design a robust water and spoils containment system when the job was already underway. The test bore for the project, which was completed by another company, had indicated the boreholes would produce about 35 gallons of water per minute. However, when we began drilling, we quickly found the boreholes were producing in excess of 200 gallons of water per minute, and given the location of the library, it was paramount this water was adequately contained.

Our engineering team was able to quickly design a water and spoils containment system to allow the job to proceed without delay by bringing two holding tanks to site to contain water and spoils. We took the water draining from the holding tank and reinjected it into boreholes that had already been drilled. Once one holding tank filled with spoils, we switched to the other tank as the first had its contents disposed of, switching between them.

With the water situation thus adequately managed, the Kingston library project was completed on time and on budget.

In April 2024 Dandelion completed a test bore for a customer planning a large geothermal installation in Riverhead, NY. Test bores are done to understand what the drilling conditions are like at a particular location, including factors such as geology, water production, the presence of reactive clay, or any other factors that could require advanced planning ahead of the larger installation and impact the expected cost of the project. It is typical to do one test bore per every 100 tons projected for the final installation. Given this scale of the planned Riverhead project, Dandelion installed three test bores to 700’ depth. In doing so, among other things, Dandelion was able to determine that drilling to 700’ depth would not be an issue.

Dandelion also used the test bores to conduct Formation Thermal Conductivity (FTC) testing. FTC testing measures the thermal response of the geology at the jobsite so when the larger borefield is designed the engineers designing it know how many bores they will need to exchange a certain amount of heat. This allows them to size the borefield correctly. FTC tests are done by cycling water that is heated at a constant rate through a ground loop for 48 hours and measuring the thermal response at a regular interval.
